Medium, Message, Mustard!
Mustard and ink on a size medium t shirt
Through my art practice, I explore intersections among identity, representation, sensory perception, and culture. Thematically, much of my work, with its blend of figurative and graphic elements, touches on the politics of inhabiting a body in a constructed world. Working primarily in charcoal and silkscreen printing, I am a passionate proponent of hybridity, mixing media to achieve a final product. As an avid explorer of medium-and-message relationships, my use of mixed media often reinforces the content of my work, which interrogates systems of rigid categorization, asks who implements them and who benefits from them, and suggests openness to other ways of seeing. I believe that the process is the art itself, that I, as the artist, am merely a participant in the creative act and the art a record of it- that much of the meaning found in my work derives from the making of the work itself rather than the final product.
